DECLARACION DEL PORTAVOZ DEL DEPARTAMENTO DE ESTADO
Durante las últimas veinticuatro horas hemos seguido
los acontecimientos ocurridos en España con sumo interés y
atención. Hemos comprobado que el ataque a la democracia
española ha provenido sólo de un reducido número de personas.
La abrumadora mayoría de las fuerzas armadas y del pueblo de
España han permanecido fieles al Rey y a la Constitución. Como
todos los amigos de España, nos congratulamos por la feliz
resolución de la crisis y por la fortaleza mostrada por las
instituciones y por los dirigentes de la nueva democracia
española. El papel desempeñado por el Rey Juan Carlos y su
conducción de la nación española han contribuido de manera
sobresaliente a la solución de la crisis y merecen especial
admiración.

TEXT OF U.S. STATEMENT ON SPAIN
We are gratified that democracy in Spain has survived.
Over the past 24 hours, we followed events in Spain
with great interest and attention. We note that the challenge
to Spanish democracy was limited to a small number of
people. The overwhelming majority of the armed forces
and the Spanish people remained loyal to the King and
the constitution.
Like all the friends of that country, we join in
expressing our congratulations on the successful resolution
of this crisis and on the strength shown by the institutions
and leaders of Spain's new democracy.
The role and leadership of King Juan Carlos were
clearly instrumental in ending the crisis and are
deserving of particular admiration.
The President called the King this morning at 10:35 A.M.
Washington time.
